That was a pretty cool use of voices dude, I liked the idea. But the result isn't what it could have been. Recording quality kinda ruined it for me. A better mix would have helped a lot. Between saturating and off-tune notes, I still enjoyed this :D

TheSandyman responds:

If you're talking about the leadvocals (that they sound like they've been recorded in low quality), it's actually just some sort of overdrive. I personally like it's sound. But you're right 'bout the mixing, it was actually one of the first things I recorded (it's quite old).
Thanks for the review, mate.

Pretty lively vocal performance haha timings were off here and there. The percussive part was a bit annoying, especially the CHECK part or whatever hehe but the recording quality was cool. I rather hated how the voice samples were triggered instead of sang, as horribly shown in the middle of the song before you start singing. But still a great effort, sounds like you gave it your all, especially with the main singing voice haha

F-Meister responds:

hahaha glad you liked it! Actually, the voice samples were "DURIAN" for the kick drum, "PEAR" for the snare, and "CHERRY" for the hihats. I guess it does get quite annoying after a while but I just wanted to hear what actual words would sound like as percussive instruments as opposed to the tried and trusted "DOOSH" "PHSHHHH" and "CHKK" sounds that a drumkit would make.

Woud have been a lot better with a better recording quality and a better mix, the voice is waaaaayyy WWAAAYYY too loud and saturated
I like the lyrics though, you should try to get it to a better quality level
and also try to be more on time, especially in the heavier part, your third paragraph
Good stuff!

death2frame responds:

the third verse was a b***h. i couldnt find the tempo for that and i gotta crappy mic. unfortunatly when your poor its hard to get good recording quality. but hanks man im glad you like it

Sounds cool!

I have the awful feeling it's made with garage band though, am I wrong?
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt
Great riffs, sounds old school

Skyler182 responds:

Thanks dude, my band and I did this in a studio. Im glad you like it, but this is only the begining. This is just something quick we wipped up. We have a really good studio set-up. But we will be doing so live songs too soon.

At first, I thought it was rather boring, but as it builds up, it's getting pretty cool, definitly sounds celtic from the start though. The synth strings and instruments you used were pretty weak and there were some very odd notes here and there, with unexpected velocity (attack strength) which were distracting. I still think that overall that composition is great and very celtic. I just wish you had worked more on your instruments.

Ikus responds:

Thanks! This piece was done with Finale, so I'm definitely in transition when it comes to the quality of the audio production and moving beyond writing out tons of measures. I really had that working against me when the production was the focus.

Although this one has the right intents, it failed on many level, the samples sound a bit fake which can be acceptable to a point, the melodies are often off key with weird notes and I could say almost out of tune sometimes, like in the very beginning and the structure is a bit weird. It still keeps a certain celtic aspect to it, regarding the instrument selection. But it has many faults that brings its score down.

Breed responds:

Not offkey but strange yeah. Its in mixolydian mode which has some strange harmonics that I wasnt able to get around very easy. Also its in 9/8 so the rhythm can be hard to follow too. Instruments are pretty bad but it's all I had. The melody in the beginning starts off horrible. Thats my main regret.

Totally not going for the epicness of space gaming, I can stil relate to this one a lot. Sounds more like credits music for a space game than the actual music but still cool. Very oldschool and bringing me back many years ago. It's only a shame that it's pretty short. You lose some points on the lack of gaming feel and complexity though.

WerewNC responds:

I'm not good enough yet to portray how epic the vastness of space is in just a few channels, so I decided to write a simple, catchy waltz, which is something I can do. It should sound quite a bit like the intro/credits song to "Elite".

Glad it brought you back, and thanks for taking the time to judge the competition.

Not a big fan of the overall sound of this one. It does sound like space travelling but it failed to transport me back in my childhood and what those oldschool space games were about. The composition was good though. Props for the bridge at 0:14 :)

F-Meister responds:

Thanks for the review. I guess you just can't please everyone :)

Great composition

My only complaint would be the samples you used, the drums lack variations in their velocity, ending up sound fake, same with the flute and the later lead instrument I failed to identify (some kind of string?)

But overall, a great composition :D Liked the choir part

Decibel responds:

Yeah, as I mentiojned in the author's comments, they suck ass. And yeah, what you're talking about is the violin, it does sound pretty fake, I'm gonna need to fix that. If Supersteph54 gets East/West back, he might help me.
Thanks for the review, Mr.Dog :P
